Find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

Can I register my name in any holochain app and prevent others from using it?

No, you can only register your name in a particular namespace. This name will be unique in that namespace, but other namespaces might have the same name. However, if you get a name in NomNom or OrgNom registry, then this name will be unique in the namespaces participating in the registries.

What is a namespace in holochain?

A namespace is a space in which several name types can be defined. It allows hApp builders to define the details of their namespace, including the name types they want to have for their namespace.

Can I decide which types of names are allowed in my namespace?

Yes, hApp builders can decide which types of names are allowed in their namespace.

Is the Nom registry centralized?

No, it's not centralized. However, it manages consensus about name registrations across a set of authorized witnesses. Usage, access, verification, and validation are done by anyone running the app, which holds the Witness Nodes to account.
